Performance Coaching for executives and managers
Solution focused coaching is a novel way of helping senior executives
and middle managers both to achieve their full potential and
to manage change in their particular areas of responsibility
within their organisations. Because results are achieved quickly
with a minimum number of sessions, it is very cost effective.
Coaching as a management tool within organisations has become
popular over the past five years and takes different forms.
In line with the philosophy of PPC of empowering people by building
on their strengths – rather than analysing and diagnosing
problems – we adopt a solution oriented methodology. By
encouraging the person being coached (coachee) to focus on their
own skills, strengths and resources we enable them to develop
a personal habit of tailored solution building.
Performance coaching is most often sought when
coachees are:
- Concerned about some aspect of their
performance
- Wanting to make specific changes in the
work setting
- Wanting to acquire or improve some specific
interpersonal skills
Solution oriented assumptions
- Coaches work briefly, collaboratively and effectively, tailoring
the coaching to the individual
- Coaching is mainly focused on achieving a specific goal (or
goals), though habits that obstruct achievements are also
addressed
- The individual executive or manager (coachee) is competent
in what they do, but would like to be more effective
- Individualised solutions are co-constructed with each coachee
- Coaches acknowledge the problem presented by the coachee
as a first step before encouraging them to describe their
preferred future
- A typical period of Solution Focused performance coaching
would comprise 3 to 6 sessions being spread over 3 to 6 months
- Affirming and complimenting are important as the individual
being coached progresses towards their desired future
- Collaboration is key to solution focused working in that
the coach tunes into the unique strengths and skills of the
coachee
- As the Solution Focused approach is a new way of learning,
coaching for one particular work based problem often results
in the coachee solving other problems in other areas of their
work or home lives
- Enhanced life skills produces lasting effect
The five main steps in the coaching process
- Acknowledging problems
It is important to acknowledge what the problem is and to
understand in what way it is a problem for the coachee
- Defining a preferred future
Developing a clear idea of how the coachee would like their
future to be; setting goals
- Identifying and constructing solutions
Understanding what will work in making progress towards the
preferred future
- Amplifying positive change
Identifying and amplifying positive change as it happens.
If it works do more of it, if not do something different
- Reinforcement
Reviewing positve developments and summarising insights reinforces
the process and promotes further success
